Frequently asked questions about bus drivers’ driving and rest times
After a maximum of 4.5 hours of driving time, a break of 45 minutes must be taken, which can also be divided into two parts – first 15 minutes, then 30 minutes (e.g. 2 hours driving – 15-minute break – 2.5 hours driving – 30-minute break).
The daily driving time is 9 hours, with the option to extend to a maximum of 10 hours on two days per week.
The daily duty time is 13 hours. After that, an uninterrupted rest period of at least 11 hours must follow. On up to three days per week, an extension to a maximum of 15 hours is permitted, provided that an uninterrupted rest period of at least 9 hours is observed afterwards.
For multi-day bus trips within the country, a continuous rest period of 24 hours must be taken after six consecutive duty days.
Under certain conditions for domestic trips and generally for international trips with a minimum stay of 24 hours the so-called 12-day rule applies: up to twelve consecutive duty days are possible, provided the legal requirements for working, driving and rest times are observed.
